Mt Monviso — Photos from  Miranda Vannucci

The mountain is known as Mt Monviso (3840 meters), in western Italian Alps, called Cozie, at the border with France. It hosts some glacial lakes and till the recent past was hosting also some glaciers, between them the Coolidge Glacier, now unfortunately almost completely disappeared. The particular stone of Monviso is a green one with some silver nuances, shining and luminous, called jadeite. For its isolated position the mountain is called The King of Stone.

An old story is about the warrior called Hannibal from Africa, who was coming to Italy (218 BC) crossing the Alps  with his elephants, through a passage in this mountain, called Traversette (3000 meters). Hannibal was a famous warrior from Carthago (city of Tunisia), who came to invade Roman Italy.

The villages are called Paesana (700 m) and Crissolo (1300 m), at the bottom of the mountain, from which the road is ascending. The houses are built in the typical grey stone of the region.

You can see the colours of Autumn, in which the leaves of many trees are changing their nuances, becoming yellow, orange and red. A few trees also in winter time are keeping their green colour, they are called evergreen. And the effects of the first snowing, in the night.

And here is the source of the famous Pò River, the longest in Italy.
