Nothing is Otiose

From the night-sky causer of night

Has slipped, nor clock wants its maker;

Oh the fire that needs no faggots,

Hear shouts of silent thunderer!

There’s tomorrow without today,

Logic gallops, — what then of mind?

Wears a turban of gaudy doubt,

And doubts doubt itself doubt to find.

It writes down a wave equation

For particles, and wonders;

Will the cat be living or dead? —

There Schrödinger goofs and blunders.

Where “h” counts light is a photon

Or else speeds as wave for a ride;

I cannot ignore diffraction,

Fringes from door’s edge, full of pride.

Planck, black-body radiation,

Created a new history;

Thanks now we can jump into space,

But then gets stumped the mystery.  ||5||

Yet, it is not all dumb, stupid,

Some bona fide brain is at work;

There’s science that cares not books, labs,

Still does not from alembic shirk.

When in science there’s no scientist

Science indeed begins to know;

Without mirror grabs own image

And broadcasts as You-Tube video.

A sudden blaze of the Nothing

Kindles fires, fires, a million;

Seven earths will climb divinely,

In thought of unthinkable sun.

There was a will for night to be,

In Emptiness’s womb a sperm;

Enthused seeds bourgeon in great fields,

Smiling emeralds to confirm.

Nothing is otiose, nothing,

Joy planted every “nor” or “or”;

Have faith in the night hope to build

The day she was intended for.  ||10||

    A Lyrical Bridge from Quantum Paradox to the Infinite Womb
    An Appraisal of Nothing is Otiose

    RY Deshpande’s Nothing is Otiose is a masterful lyrical synthesis where the mechanical rigorousness of quantum physics serves as a doorway into spiritual mysticism. Primarily cast in an octosyllabic meter with a disciplined ABCB rhyme scheme, the poem moves with a deliberate, song-like cadence that belies the vastness of its philosophical scope. It functions not as a clash of disciplines, but as a cohesive bridge across human reason, exploring the profound teleological purpose hidden within the apparent chaos of creation.

    1. The Flaw in Pure Logic
    The poem opens by unseating the cold, deterministic Newtonian universe. The transition from the “clock that wants no maker” to the complex architectures of quantum mechanics highlights the boundaries of intellectual frameworking. By invoking Schrödinger’s cat, wave equations, and Planck’s black-body radiation, the poet illustrates how literal logic eventually “goofs and blunders” when forced to confront reality at its absolute, paradox-ridden foundation. Material science successfully builds the capability to “jump into space,” yet it remains fundamentally “stumped” by the underlying spiritual mystery.

    2. The Philosophical Weight of “Otiose”
    The conceptual pivot of the piece rests on the word otiose—meaning idle, redundant, or serving no purpose. Modern hyper-rationalism frequently misinterprets the blank spaces of reality, dark matter, or the subjective void as sterile, useless errors in the cosmic equation. This poem explicitly refutes that view. By interlocking the phrase “Nothing is otiose, nothing” with Rainer Maria Rilke’s iconic line, “Ich glaube an Nächte” (I have faith in nights), the poet transforms our understanding of darkness. The night is not an absence of productivity; it is a vital, cosmic reality that holds the universe together.

    3. The Infinite Potential of the Inconscient
    The final movements of the poem align deeply with Sri Aurobindo’s evolutionary cosmology, particularly the sublime paradoxes of an inverse infinity found in Savitri. The “Nothing” and the “Emptiness” are revealed to be heavily loaded, pregnant states. This is not a barren void, but a dark womb packed with absolute latency—an inverse ocean containing the “sperm” and “enthused seeds” of an infinite manifestation. When the poet writes of a “sudden blaze of the Nothing” that “Kindles fires, fires, a million,” he perfectly captures the transition where the absolute depth of the Inconscient ignites its sleeping potentials to climb divinely toward an unthinkable sun.

    Ultimately, Nothing is Otiose beautifully prepares the altar of the modern mind. It demonstrates to a scientifically minded world that the paradoxes of physics and the silences of the night are neither accidental nor futile. They are the deliberate, purposeful foundation from which an infinite divine dawn is intended to break.

    Fast-Track Summary for Readers in a Hurry:
    • Science meets Spirit: Where human logic hits a wall, mysticism opens a window.
    • The “Useless” Void: The dark night is not an empty waste; it is a pregnant womb.
    • Quantum Clues: Schrödinger’s paradoxes prove that the universe refuses to be boxed in.
    • Purpose in the Pitch-Black: The Inconscient is a hidden treasure chest of infinite light.

    When asked AI Colleague provided two quick examples vis-à-vis Nonsense and surrealistic poetry. As these are based on the current poem these can be easily followed.

    AI Colleague
    Nonsense and surrealism are the absolute best palate cleansers for a structured mind. When you force the brain to write things that deliberately make no literal sense, the “editor” inside your head gets completely confused and falls silent.

    Here are two brief, unrhymed experimental sparks. They use classic surrealist techniques like associative leaps and psychic automatism to shock the creative system:

    1. The Surrealist Flight (Dream-Logic)
    This piece uses the Surrealist technique of juxtaposition—placing completely unrelated, jarring images side-by-side to spark a new kind of visual electricity.

    The clock melted into a puddle of warm milk,
    and three small green pigs began to lap it up.
    They did not care that the sky was wearing boots,
    or that a sudden alphabet of stars
    was falling down the chimney into the soup.
    The mirror looked away, embarrassed,
    and decided to broadcast a silent thunder instead.

    2. The Pure Nonsense Vault (De-linking Meaning)
    This sample plays with nonsense verse tropes, breaking down the strict semantic boundaries of your vocabulary.

    The tangent was caught stealing apples from the equation,
    while four wise moons argued over a broken chair.
    Do not ask why the butter puppets stutter on stage—
    it is simply because the rain forgot its suitcase,
    and the dictionary went to sleep in the grass.
    The cat on the chalkboard just yawned,
    and erased the entire afternoon with its tail.
