07: Scribbled Notes — The Eternal’s Powers

To vanquish Death Savitri was told to find her soul and harbour the Divine Force in it. She has done it. Soul and Oversoul rush into each other and become one. There is the descent of Mahākuṇdalīṇi in it. But that is not sufficient. She has taken a mortal birth in the Inconscience and as long as its elements are present in her she won’t be able to win victory over Death, that stuff of inconscience itself would be capitalised by him to thwart her attempt to defeat him. She is told to annul herself completely that only God be.

Banish all thought from thee and be God’s void. ||128.46||

Then shalt thou uncover the Unknowable

And the Superconscient conscious grow on thy tops;

Infinity’s vision through thy gaze shall pierce,

Thou shalt look into the eyes of the Unknown;

Find the hid Truth in things seen null and false,

Behind things known discover Mystery’s rear. ||128.47||

Thou shalt be one with God’s bare reality

And the miraculous world he has become

And the diviner miracle still to be

When Nature who is now unconscious God

Translucent grows to the Eternal’s light,

Her seeing his sight, her walk his steps of power

And life is filled with a spiritual joy

And Matter is the Spirit’s willing bride. ||128.48||

Consent to be nothing and none, dissolve Time’s work,

Cast off thy mind, step back from form and name. ||128.49||

Annul thyself that only God may be. ||128.50||

That is Savitri’s Nirvana Yoga. Calm and detached, aloof, she stands back. She is “a witness of the drama of herself, a student of her own interior scene,” watching “the passion and the toil of life, hearing in the crowded thoroughfares of mind the unceasing tread and passage of her thoughts.” And what does she see?

The unseen grew visible and audible:

Thoughts leaped down from a superconscient field

Like eagles swooping from a viewless peak,

Thoughts gleamed up from the screened subliminal depths

Like golden fishes from a hidden sea. ||129.22||

This world is a vast unbroken totality,

A deep solidarity joins its contrary powers. ||129.23||

God’s summits look back on the mute Abyss. ||129.24||

So man evolving to divinest heights

Colloques still with the animal and the Djinn;

The human godhead with star-gazer eyes

Lives still in one house with the primal beast. ||129.25||

The high meets the low, all is a single plan. ||129.26||

So she beheld the many births of thought,

If births can be of what eternal is;

For the Eternal’s powers are like himself,

Timeless in the Timeless, in Time ever born. ||129.27||

This too she saw that all in outer mind

Is made, not born, a product perishable,

Forged in the body’s factory by earth-force. ||129.28||

Out of the mind she rises to escape its law, stands free from Nature, sees creation’s life from far above. Then upon all she lays her sovereign will dedicating it to God’s timeless calm. All grows in her being’s space. She has annulled herself but she must not get lost. The Earth-Mother claims her back to do the work for which she has come here.

The first step in the Nirvana Yoga was to empty out what arises from Mind. The difficulty is Thought has many births, ever born in Time, timeless births in the Time. It is so because it is a power of the Eternal himself. Like thought every aspect in the creation, love, joy, beauty, feeling, sensation, resoluteness, all have births and births, each birth as in the Eternal. Transience and Stability cannot be if that Eternal were not there. Wherefrom do the bird-songs come, the murmur of the stream, the roar of the lion and of the sea, waxing and waning of the Moon, the seasons, the solar flares, and the eclipses also? From there only, ultimately?

But are these seasons in the Eternal himself? Is that a frozen existence, without moving Time or the Timeless? it moveless and unmoving, giving rise to movement? Do the Transcendences grow and expand and flourish and multiply bourgeon? No, because there is immortality but not deathlessness. The miracle to happen is in deathlessness it giving rise to change form, change according to the needs of consciousness, bringing into expression the wonders of the possibilities, unending in Time, ever renewed or new-created. That is the power of the Eternal in the dynamics of Eternity’s Time, Brahman ever becoming more and more Brahman.

    Deep and thought-provoking…
    That line “annul thyself that only God may be” really stays ✨

      “This world is a vast unbroken totality” “A deep solidarity joins its contrary powers”

      Il n’y a pas deux plans à réconcilier, ni une inconscience à éliminer pour rendre le réel adéquat. Il y a une totalité déjà non divisée, dont la division est une apparence de perspective.

        This is an old outdated scholastic-academic Vedanta, and things have advanced far ahead of that. Move on into them or else go elsewhere.

      Dear Sir 🙏

      Thank You for presenting this serie of Scribble Notes, “Annul thyself” is not ordinary password, after annulment God is and remains. Jesus said: “nobody takes my life, l give it voluntarily, l can take it back voluntarily, l have this power and order from my father”. Savitri vanquished death the same way, Satyavan learned it later.

      This is the power of new birth from above, from God of which the prologue of John speaks and which Sri Autobindo received and continues to transmit to those who are open. There is no death any more then, instead Life Divine begins.

      May it transform entire Humankind and never stop being welcomed by Her children🙏

        But it must also be emphasised that the line “annul thyself that only God may be” is not just a devotee’s prayer or emotional entreaty, not a moralistic-ethical utterance, not a religious credo, nothing of that ordinary usual kind. It is an extremely powerful occult-yogic diamond with the density and intensity that belongs to the solar regions. This is a very crucial stage in the Yoga of Savitri. She has housed the divine Shakti in her soul, but what about her being that has taken birth in the Inconscient? Those elements must go away, removed, blown out. Then only will she be able to win victory over Death. This Nirvana-Yoga is absolutely unique to Savitri, Savitri alone.

    The reasoning can lead up to the threshold of the Real. Sri Aurobindo and Mother tell us that tarka does not give direct truth and must be surpassed by a knowledge by identity. But what happens when it is abandoned in favor of interpretations of narratives or personal experiences?

    Should it not be surpassed by a knowledge by identity ? identity with the Real?

    Tarka eliminates error, and recognition (pratyabhijñā), immediate or progressive, non-discursive, fully lived, follows. Or not. One may remain at the threshold, but one never crosses it by short-circuiting lucidity.

    Is it not questionable, and structurally fragile, to invalidate tarka in the name of narratives? The surpassing of tarka is valid only if it is surpassed by an immediate evidence, not by an interpretation or a story.Tarka is a limit, but also a protection.

      But Tarka is only a formal system of Logic, The Logic of the Finite. But there is also the Logic of the Infinite unreachable by Tarka which is just a mental mode of discernment and understanding. It is from larger ignorance to a smaller ignorance. Tarka is the helper but Tarka is also the bar. In the post-human possibilities one must climb the ladder of ascending knowledge, going to revelation and beyond. It will be a gross error to read Sri Aurobindo with the Logic of the Finite which will always lead to “structural ambiguities”. If one is extremely fond of Tarka then forget Sri Aurobindo, never try to bring him into that Ignorance.

        If Sri Aurobindo is said to be understood by a “Logic of the Infinite,” then that logic must still show intelligible non-contradiction at the level where it speaks. Otherwise, every inconsistency can be immunized by saying: “the finite mind cannot understand.” That is not higher knowledge.

        What exceeds reason does not thereby become irrational.It becomes trans-rational, which means: it may surpass discursive thought, but it does not ask us to abandon rigor. And btw, logic of the finite does not exist because finite does not exist.The real surpassing of tarka occurs when thought falls silent before an immediate evidence of the infinite Real.

    All that is shown in The Life Divine if one cares to read it keeping aside one’s obsession with the outdated scholastic-academic Tarka or Vedanta.
