“It is a new experience

8 June 1963

It was like the action of a Force. Without any thought or idea, only the sensation and  a sort of perception of a stupendous Force, like the Force of the earth — all the combinations of the forces along with an action that came from above and worked on them. It was going through me, but it was an incalculable MASS, almost … indefinite, and simultaneous. And it went on and on and on — three hours without letup.

It was a Force that came from beyond and acted upon all the forces of the earth… . And all the time, in the physical centre (the corporeal base), with something in an ecstatic state; it was very interesting — an ecstasy that sparkled like a diamond — was there, so sweet, so sweet, so peaceful, as though it were there all the while, telling the body, “Don’t be afraid, don’t worry, don’t be afraid, all is well.” It lasted more than three hours.

I wondered, “What will my condition be like when I get up?” — Very quiet… smiling and saying, “Oh, things CAN be that way.”

It’s the first time. I’ve had currents of force, I’ve had actions on the earth, I’ve had forces coming to me, all sorts of things … Something wanted me to be very quiet and not to worry.

It was certainly something happening FOR the earth; but it didn’t come from the centre of forces that generally acts on the earth. It was “something happening.” And  it gave the sense that the earth was very small.

It is a new experience.

Obviously, there was … there must have been a cause for alarm, because immediately I was told, “You see, this is what is going on,” and it was thanks to that ecstasy in the body that there was no alarm: “Oh, things are fine, everything is fine.”

And when the experience was over, it didn’t end like an experience exhausting itself. All the same, when I woke up everything was fine.

When I had that experience of the pulsations of Love in April last year, I had the perception of the colour, the “psychological” perception of the state I was in (how can I explain?), for instance, the quality of the vibration of Love. At the time, I was That, I was those vibrations, but I was fully aware of the quality of those vibrations, and remained so for months — this is completely different! It was nothing but an action.

And an action in which the human body is much less than an ant: an imperceptible point. Yet there seemed to be ONLY this body! This body was a body … it was THE body! And that point — that comforting point of ecstasy — was very small. But it was there, quite insistent, very conscious,  telling me, “Don’t interfere; leave it to me entirely, all is well — see, all is well.” Very small…. Yet it was my body.

Is it a new work on the earth, or is it that you have seen something that goes on habitually but of which you were unaware previously? I wondered… .

But the question isn’t put correctly. It is something eternal which, because of what happened at that time (not at that minute, because, it must have been going on long before and long afterwards) … it has become something new, BECAUSE of what happened. Coming back to all the things we know, we could say that it is something newly manifested.

But my impression was … an impression of Eternity. An Eternity BEYOND TIME (not something that lasts forever: something timeless), yes, the word would be: “manifesting,” “making itself perceptible,” or “becoming active” — Yes, acting, becoming perceptible because it acts.

That was my impression. I could also say: something universal which becomes individual; not individual in the sense of a small person, but conscious of itself.

It was … a Force in motion, “something” stupendous! It was Power in its most formidable aspect — crushing. With REAL All- Powerfulness; Power in its all-powerfulness, with that something unshakable, immutable, untouchable [that sparkled diamond-like]. Yes, really Power, that’s right.

And it was quite clear that a solicitude, the supreme Solicitude, took great care to reassure me: “All is well.” Without that, obviously, the feeling was that everything, everything was going to be dissolved.

Maybe it’s the supramental Power which has manifested. It was Power in action. I had the feeling it was a decisive turning point.

The Force is eternal and becomes perceptible: prakāśa / vimarśa.

The Universal differentiates into a conscious individual: modal plurality within the absolute unity.

Integral and immutable power: self-present Consciousness.

The body as a minuscule point of contact: local contraction, phenomenal intensity.

Temporality and eternity: action of the eternal, non-teleological.

Decisive but not creative: manifestation of what already IS.

“… It is something eternal … Coming back to all the things we know, we COULD say that it is something newly manifested. But my impression was … an impression of Eternity. An Eternity BEYOND TIME (not something that lasts forever: something TIMELESS), yes, the word would be: “manifesting,” “MAKING ITSELF PERCEPTIBLE,” or “becoming active” — Yes, acting, BECOMING PERCEPTIBLE BECAUSE IT ACTS….something universal which becomes individual; not individual in the sense of a small person, but CONSCIOUS OF ITSELF….Power in its all-powerfulness, with that something unshakable, immutable, untouchable.”

An infinite, self-present, and free consciousness manifests locally, creating moments of phenomenal intensity without ever losing its absolute integrity or immortality, while allowing the contracted individual to recognize, participate, and act.

Mother’s experience reports a new phenomenal intensity lived in consciousness and in the body; but the interpretation that it comes from a force that “descends” from a supramental plane or that it marks a cosmic stage is a reading that goes beyond the immediate content of the experience.

Mother herself attempts an interpretation: “Maybe it’s the supramental Power which has manifested. I don’t know.”She also says, at other moments, that it would be a first “manifestation” of the supramental Force on Earth, which is a cosmic interpretation of physical and psychic experiences. What introduces a teleological or evolutionist interpretation is the discursive narrative that frames it, with the idea that this Force would be supramental and manifested for the earth, or again that it would be a cosmic “turning point”. This is not the experience in itself, but the interpretation that it is linked to a teleology (a plan, a design, a cosmic turning point).

Certain passages of Mother promote an interpretation of this kind, such as:“…‘the first descent of the supramental forces into the Inconscient’? (Mother shakes her head) … it wasn’t into the Inconscient, it was into the earth atmosphere. … It’s better to put ‘manifestation.’ ”Mother’s Agenda, 11 March 1967, “The Supramental Force is ready for manifestation, let us get ready also and it will manifest …” Words of the Mother, 26 June 1954, “The Force is there waiting to be manifested, we must discover the new forms through which it can manifest.” .. “New forms are needed for the manifestation of a new Force.” 12 June 1954, “We must never forget that our goal is to manifest the Supramental Reality.” 25 May 1954, “The manifestation of the Supramental upon earth is no more a promise but a living fact… It is at work here, and one day… even the most unconscious… shall be obliged to recognise it.”,24 April 1956,

“A divine life in a divine body is the formula of the ideal that we envisage… As Nature has evolved beyond Matter and manifested Life, beyond Life and manifested Mind, so she must evolve beyond Mind and manifest a consciousness and power of our existence free from the imperfection and limitation of our mental existence…” 29 May 1957, here the formulation “As Nature has evolved beyond Matter” is a teleological and pseudo-scientific projection within spiritual discourse: it assumes historical and ontological facts that neither science nor metaphysics have validated.

These interpretations are not found in the experience itself but in the discourse that surrounds it. They can be misleading, because they present the experience as proof of an evolutionary plan or of a force external to local consciousness.

Sri Aurobindo rather speaks of the inner capacity of consciousness:“Evolution is of Consciousness; physical and mental existence are its forms only.” The Life Divine, Book II, ch. 11

But / and, he also says:

“… then Mind itself evolved and organised in Man. This evolution, this spiritual progression — does it stop short here in the imperfect mental being called Man? … by ascending the ladder farther we can find a point at which the hold of … Ignorance ceases…” Letters on Yoga, 1935….But: “Mind itself evolved and organised in Man” is the same assumption … That has no definitive validation in either science or metaphysics.

And 🙏☺️: “we can find a point at which the hold of … Ignorance ceases” indicates the experiential tipping point where the contracted, local perspective dissolves, revealing the fullness of consciousness — self-luminous awareness and the cessation of avidyā.

“Evidently it’s Power…We always conceive of power acting ON something, ON an object, with an object, WITH A VIEW to realizing something; we cannot separate the two—but it was none of that, it was… Power in action. But not an action ON something.”
