The birth of Thought

आणि पाहिलाही प्रकाश उंचावरचा;

हे खोल गूढ जाणण्यास पाहे वाट ती;

अथवा भल्या वैश्विक क्षेत्रातूनी येति तें;

ह्या नग्न विचारांचे असे मूळ आत्म्यात;

पडे बाहेर स्मिताचा चेहरा हृदयातून;

विचार, चमकणारे देवदूत मेंदूच्या मागे;

स्वर्गाचे किरण पार्थिव स्वरूपात ओती;

अलौकिक सौंदर्य, परम आनंदाचे स्पर्श;

घूमती त्यांचे मूक अव्यक्त प्रतिध्वनी;

A Note:

This is a rendering of a passage from Sri Aurobindo’s Savitri, The Book of Yoga, Book Seven Canto Six. Savitri was told by a mighty and uplifting Voice to annul herself that only God may be. She sets herself to follow the instructions and observes the origin of Thought. She sees that it comes either from the subtle body or from the cosmic field. Here is a presentation in Marathi of that significantly occult passage, the details revealed absolutely for the first time in the spiritual revelations. The original in snaps is here:

She saw the Powers that stare from the Abyss

And the wordless Light that liberates the soul. ||129.5||

But most her gaze pursued the birth of thought. ||129.6||

 In our unseen subtle body thought is born

Or there it enters from the cosmic field. ||129.9||

Oft from her soul stepped out a naked thought

Luminous with mysteried lips and wonderful eyes;

Or from her heart emerged some burning face

And looked for life and love and passionate truth, … ||129.10||

 A seeing will pondered between the brows;

Thoughts, glistening Angels stood behind the brain

In flashing armour, folding hands of prayer,

And poured heaven’s rays into the earthly form. ||129.12||

Imaginations flamed up from her breast,

Unearthly beauty, touches of surpassing joy…

Invading the small sensitive flower of the throat

They brought their mute, unuttered resonances

To kindle the figures of a heavenly speech. ||129.13||

Her body’s thoughts climbed from her conscious limbs

And carried their yearnings to its mystic crown

Where Nature’s murmurs meet the Ineffable. ||129.15||

Book 7 Canto 6 Painting #6; Painting by Huta:

Only sometimes small thoughts arose and fell

Like quiet waves upon a silent sea

Or ripples passing over a lonely pool

When a starry stone disturbs its dreaming rest. ||129.40||

    A rendering of the Marathi text into English by Akash Deshpande. He writes: “I did a literal translation. It’s awkward.” It is here, however:

    Heard voices rising from the valley of darkness

    And also saw the light at the summit

    But where takes place the birth of thoughts

    To know this deep secret she waits

    For one, in the subtle body is their origin

    Or on the universal field they course

    By secret lips and wonderful eyes brilliant

    The root of these naked thoughts is in the soul

    Or else seeking life, love, passionate truth

    A smiling face emerges from the heart

    Crossing eyebrows, one visible thought —

    Thoughts, shining messengers of god behind the brain

    Wearing a shining armor, hands folded in prayer

    Heavens rays in earthly body pours

    Exploded from the chest imaginations

    Other-worldly beauty, touch of the highest happiness

    Marching on the throat’s nervous center

    Ring their mute unexpressed echoes

    Through nerves and sinews flow those thoughts

    Exuberant figures of heavenly speech

      A distilled version from Akash:

      From the dark valley, in the summit light

      Where is thought born, she is eager to know

      In the subtle body, on universal fields

      Whether naked and rooted in the soul

      Or seeking life and love and passionate truth

      Angels animating mind, armored, prayerful

      Imagination exploding in the chest

      A quiver at the center of the throat

      Mid mute echoes flowing through nerve and sinew

      Exuberant figures of heavenly speech
