“A dark ambiguous Presence questioned all”

The first dawn broke in the sky when in the Void

Appeared rocks and mountains but with no throb,

The light lost in the cave of insentient objects,

The souls held by them in the dumbness of speech;

But silent were not the gods who yearned for beauty

In living moulds, to awaken forgotten sense

In the splendour and joy of adventurous life;

But a Presence wearing the robe of Night stunned her.

The Fall of Life

Savitri Book 2 Canto 3 – The Glory and the Fall of Life

When earth was built in the unconscious Void

And nothing was save a material scene,

Identified with sea and sky and stone

Her young gods yearned for the release of souls

Asleep in objects, vague, inanimate. ||36.8||

Life heard the call and left her native light. ||36.16||

Overflowing from her bright magnificent plane

On the rigid coil and sprawl of mortal space,

Here too the gracious great-winged Angel poured

Her splendour and her sweetness and her bliss,

Hoping to fill a fair new world with joy. ||36.17||

But while the magic breath was on its way,

Before her gifts could reach our prisoned hearts,

A dark ambiguous Presence questioned all. ||36.20||

    Death is a negative response of the Inconscient to the entry of Life into Matter. Before that Death was not present anywhere. He sprang up after this event.

    Sri Aurobindo: Savitri is represented in the poem as an incarnation of the Divine Mother.. This incarnation is supposed to have taken place in far past times when the whole thing had to be opened, so as to “hew the ways of Immortality”.  (1936)

    “To hew the ways of immortality” — that is the entire thrust of the Poem. Nowhere we have anything like conquest of the Inconscient; but the conquest is what ensues from it.

    Conquest of Death is more than the Immortality; it is deathlessness.
