That gainful necessity

A splendid urge turned into a thick dark seed

Compelled perhaps by some gainful necessity;

In sunlight and rain of spirit’s abundances

Must spring up festive yield from unproven soil;

What if adventurous life confronts death

To awaken locked stubborn mind of matter!

For her it can never be “look before you leap”,

And that sheer joy is her confident victory.

The festive yield

Flaming from her body

Love is a grand creator, par excellence,

Yet there is the gainful necessity of death;

In the unproven soil of mortality

From the dark seed has life to bear a rich fruit;

But it can be when is fought the tough battle,

To awaken the will supreme to a new wonder;

And therefore to claim her love does she come,

Flaming from her body, to win the victory.

The painting below is by Huta illustrating the following lines from Savitri, Book Nine Canto Two:

Flaming from her body

Death missioned to the night his lethal call. ||137.29||

“This is my silent dark immensity…

Entombing the vanity of life’s desires. ||137.30||

Hast thou beheld thy source, O transient heart,

And known from what the dream thou art was made?” ||137.31||
