Ashes of the pyre

Should ashes of the pyre be forever the doom

Of the body made from unprepared substance?

Fruit rot because the tree never received sunlight?

The bed of dark mirky sand swallow the river?

But what else can it be if the obscure will

Of the atom fails to respond to its own truth?

Now comes here the renowned incarnate Yoga

And is kindled the flame burning Death’s falsehood.

When Savitri had asserted “I am, I love, I see. I act, I will”, Death snapped in, saying “Know also”; to it immediately she rebutted: [Savitri Book Nine Canto Two]

“When I have loved for ever, I shall know. ||137.129||

Love in me knows the truth all changings mask. ||137.130||

I know that knowledge is a vast embrace:

I know that every being is myself,

In every heart is hidden the myriad One. ||137.131||

I know the calm Transcendent bears the world,

The veiled Inhabitant, the silent Lord:

I feel his secret act, his intimate fire;

I hear the murmur of the cosmic Voice. ||137.132||

I know my coming was a wave from God. ||137.133||

For all his suns were conscient in my birth,

And one who loves in us came veiled by death. ||137.134||

Then man was born among the monstrous stars

Dowered with a mind and heart to conquer thee.” ||137.135||

To this Death, in the eternity of his ruthless will, and sure of his empire and his armoured night, answered not; his victim lips fell mute:

He stood in silence and in darkness wrapped,

A figure motionless, a shadow vague,

Girt with the terrors of his secret sword. ||137.137||

Half-seen in clouds appeared a sombre face;

Night’s dusk tiara was his matted hair,

The ashes of the pyre his forehead’s sign. ||137.138||

A fig|+ure mo|+tion+less,| a shad|+ow vague,|

Girt with| the ter|+rors of| his se|+cret sword.|

Half-seen| in clouds| ap+peared| a som|+bre face;|

Night’s dusk| ti+ar|+a was| his mat|+ted hair,|

The ash|+es of| the pyre| his fore|+head’s sign.|
