Of divine anarchy

Smart and wise people talk of divine anarchy,

But alas by gravity go the stars in the night;

For that anarchism there has to be free choice,

A will grown in utter strength of the truth-will;                 

Oh, self-determination it does cherish,

For variousness of joy founded in the one;

The multitudinous idea-act works out

In louds and softs of dynamic harmony.

    Zech Joya Panganiban from Auroville writes 2 emails to me, which are reproduced in the following. These elaborate the realism of the phrase “Divine Anarchy” as we have in Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. What could not be elaborated in a poem has come out very well here, a contextual as well as a total perspective.

    (Clearly “temporary necessities”, even as the Government Administration is needed to counter-check the anarchic tendencies of egoistic “self-professed Aurovilians” prior to the Divine Manifestation of the new apex species the Supramental being which is estimated at around 300 years (see below PS), “a few groups of centuries”, from 29th February 1956. Who anyway but the Supreme Divine Mother is modulating the Play of all Her children, including all in the Central Government assigned to Auroville. So more intense compelling circumstances to come. That is why the willing servitors and Hero Warriors were lovegifted the easiest and most joyful Sunlit Path of Bhakti to the Supreme Divine Mother MahaShakti to view and engage in the Play from a higher vantage point in Yogic Samatā)

    “Someone from Auroville wrote to me that he thought he had come here to obey no one but himself (or words to that effect), but he noticed there are rules and laws. And he said, “I am not going to do any of this; I am a free man and refuse to do this.” This was reported to me, naturally, so I wrote to him (I don’t remember): “One is free only when one is conscious of the Divine and conscious that it is the Divine who makes decisions in everyone, otherwise one is the slave of one’s desires, one’s habits, of all conventions….” I sent him that, and he kept quiet.

    That’s what I wanted to add here [to this aphorism]. We should say: One is free only when it is the Divine who makes decisions in each of us, otherwise men are the slaves of their desires, their habits, of all conventions, all laws, all rules…. And the more they think themselves free, the more bound they are!”

    As the Mother has already left Her human physical body, who will check the “ego-anarchists” Aurovilians?

    “One must have an absolutely transparent sincerity. Lack of sincerity is the cause of the difficulties we meet at present. Insincerity is in all men. There are perhaps a hundred men on earth who are totally sincere. Man’s very nature makes him insincere―it is very complicated, for he is constantly deceiving himself, hiding the truth from himself, making excuses for himself. Yoga is the way to become sincere in all parts of the being.

    It is difficult to be sincere, but at least one can be mentally sincere; this is what can be demanded of Aurovilians. The force is there, present as never before; man’s insincerity prevents it from descending, from being felt. The world lives in falsehood, all relations between men have until now been based on falsehood and deceit. Diplomatic relations between nations are based on falsehood. They claim to want peace, and meanwhile they are arming themselves. Only a transparent sincerity in man and among nations can usher in a transformed world.

    Auroville is the first attempt in this experiment. A new world will be born; if men are willing to make an effort for transformation, to seek for sincerity, it is possible. From animal to man, thousands of years were needed; today, with his mind, man can will and hasten a transformation towards a man who shall be God.

    This transformation by the help of the mind―by self-analysis―is a first step; afterwards, it is necessary to transform the vital impulses: that is much more difficult, and especially to transform the physical. Every cell in our bodies must become conscious. This is the work I am doing here; it will enable the conquest of death. That is another story; that will be the humanity of the future, perhaps after hundreds of years, perhaps sooner. It will depend on men, on nations.

    Auroville is the first step towards this goal.”

    Thus in “To Be A True Aurovilian” She was very specific on the first necessity, of being conscious of the psychic being:

    “The first necessity is the inner discovery in order to know what one truly is behind social, moral, cultural, racial and hereditary appearances.

    At the centre there is a being free, vast and knowing, who awaits our discovery and who ought to become the active centre of our being and our life in Auroville.”

    “Divine Anarchy” is a spiritual state, one of the highest orders. It cannot be cheaply brought down to a socio-political level which is full of ignorance and bondage. Kireet Joshi did it, and that was the worst thing he did while fighting a case in a court of human law. Now Auroville is stuck with it. One may glorify it as a “temporary necessity”; but that can never be the Mother. The soul of the individual must be released from Ignorance and his spirit free from the workings of the Lower Nature, aparā prakriti. One day this may happen in Auroville when it first starts becoming spiritual. Yet that has to emerge from within itself, self-administration and not any national or international governance howsoever wonderful it may be. For one’s freewill to be dynamically effective it must be in the Truth-Will itself, Truth-Will that encourages a thousand such freewills.

    By following the doctrine of “temporary necessities” one is simply perpetuating the old Past instead of taking a bright leap into the new Future. Liberal and enlightened preparation and compelling invocation in the full faith and efficacy of a superior Power, in the Mother herself, has to be founded. Such a collective will has to emerge in them who love and cherish the ideal of Auroville, the Mother’s City of Dawn. Not that it is not there in a certain measure; but it has to become stronger and firmer notwithstanding all the human problems and difficulties. There should not be any deviation or departure from the core values which were neglected when the court cases were being fought in the early stages. Lack of faith in the Mother’s working could only be the explanation. It should not happen any time, and let there be that confidence in her, instead of subscribing to “temporary necessities”.
