Impressionism vs Post-Impressionism

“One cannot talk about Impressionism without mentioning Claude Monet, the founder of the ‘Impressionist’ movement. His painting ‘Impression, Sunrise’ became the name for the movement, and then his series on ‘Water Lilies’ clenched his fame. Along with Monet, there were Degas, Renoir, and many more. Post-impressionism on the other hand had Vincent van Gogh and his works like ‘Starry Night’ and ‘Sunflowers’. The use of bold, emotional brushwork and dark colours that popped through defined this age. With him were Paul Cezzane, Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, and many more.”

    “Impressionism paints light as seen by the artist by putting down different small strokes of the same value but different colours next to each other and lets the eye blending. Post-Impressionism is not well defined . It first extended Impressionism with bolder colours and forms (van Gogh eg) then became more abstract (Picasso, eg). Prior the painter did the blending on the canvas, eg da Vinci Mona Lisa etc.”

    But with all that, finally, what does a painter want to achieve? Beauty of form has to be the æsthetic consideration of this visual art, ultimately behind the form to be seen or experienced the formless. Perhaps even the most creative photograph cannot catch it. A massive stone statue of the Buddha in Ajanta Caves, for instance, begins to stand aside in the tranquil vastness of peace, with its immutability, peace which is also dynamically luminous.

    “Very interesting your post and comments on Impressionism. Painters names are not mentioned. The dotted painting is called pointillism, particular to Serat. I think others are Utrillot, Manet, Monet….”
