“Temporary necessity”

It was but the ghost of Mister Wrong who to me

Had come one night wearing a loose robe and a cap;

Gave me a thick blue-grey coin made of gun metal,

With figure of a shouting raven on one side;

But then from the hilltop when I tossed it up, high,

The figure it showed, dew-fresh, started smiling;

“I am a temporary necessity,” it said,

“Take from me, at present life has a need of death.”

“अस्थायी आवश्यकता”

तत् किन्तु मिस्टर रॉन्ग् इत्यस्य भूतः आसीत् यः मम कृते

एकदा रात्रौ शिथिलवस्त्रं टोपीं च धारयन् आगतः आसीत्;

बन्दुकधातुनिर्मितं स्थूलं नीलधूसरं मुद्रां दत्तवान्,

एकस्मिन् पार्श्वे उद्घोषककाकस्य आकृतिं कृत्वा;

परन्तु तदा पर्वतशिखरात् यदा अहं तत् उपरि क्षिप्तवान्, उच्चैः,

तया दर्शितं आकृतिं ओस-नवीनम्, स्मितं कर्तुं आरब्धा;

“अहं क्षणिकः आवश्यकता अस्मि” इति तत्र उक्तम् ।

“मम गृहाण, सम्प्रति जीवनस्य मृत्युः आवश्यकी अस्ति।”

Death the rapacious black raven

“Ravens are massive birds with a thick neck and distinctive shaggy throat feathers. Like other corvids, ravens have strong, large feet and long bills. Most ravens are a solid black. Ravens most closely resemble the common crow, but they soar in flight, more like a hawk. Another distinguishing feature from crows are their slender wings and wedge shaped tail.”

    As long as we remain in Ignorance, miserably bound to labouring inferior Nature it seems everything, good or bad, evil or virtuous, pain or joy, fallen life or death, half truth or falsehood, everything serves a certain functional need, merrily glorified as temporary necessity. Then the Children of Wotan for whom Night is a pilgrimage rule our future. There is then the death-flame laughing in our eyes. [ https://incarnateword.in/cwsa/02/the-children-of-wotan ] It is the killing shout of the black raven. It could be the massive hammer of God beating us into shape so that we may be moulded as instruments for noble work in the world, pain the severe hammer to break dead resistance, it sculpting us to greatness [Savitri]. But how does one escape this hammer of God, come out of this dreadful temporary necessity? It is possible only by a flaming urge in us, by a strong fierce-intense will in us to come out of it, it is by commitment to it, by constant application this will be. It is in the strength of that aspiration all the winning help comes, all starts happening with that God-response, all gets done if the God-touch is there. Our truest greatness lies in preparing ourselves for that wonder to take possession of our fate and destiny.

    Sri Aurobindo

    “Where is the end of your armoured march, O children of Wotan?
    Earth shudders with fear at your tread, the death-flame laughs in your eyes.”
    “We have seen the sign of Thor and the hammer of new creation,
    A seed of blood on the soil, a flower of blood in the skies.
    We march to make of earth a hell and call it heaven.
    The heart of mankind we have smitten with the whip of the sorrows seven;
    The Mother of God lies bleeding in our black and gold sunrise.”

    “I hear the cry of a broken world, O children of Wotan.”
    “Question the volcano when it burns, chide the fire and bitumen!
    Suffering is the food of our strength and torture the bliss of our entrails.
    We are pitiless, mighty and glad, the gods fear our laughter inhuman.
    Our hearts are heroic and hard; we wear the belt of Orion:
    Our will has the edge of the thunderbolt, our acts the claws of the lion.
    We rejoice in the pain we create as a man in the kiss of a woman.”

    “Have you seen your fate in the scales of God, O children of Wotan,
    And the tail of the Dragon lashing the foam in far-off seas?”
    “We mock at God, we have silenced the mutter of priests at his altar.
    Our leader is master of Fate, medium of her mysteries.
    We have made the mind a cypher, we have strangled Thought with a cord;
    Dead now are pity and honour, strength only is Nature’s lord.
    We build a new world-order; our bombs shout Wotan’s peace.

    “We are the javelins of Destiny, we are the children of Wotan,
    We are the human Titans, the supermen dreamed by the sage.
    A cross of the beast and demoniac with the godhead of power and will,
    We were born in humanity’s sunset, to the Night is our pilgrimage.
    On the bodies of perishing nations, mid the cry of the cataclysm coming,
    To a presto of bomb and shell and the aeroplane’s fatal humming,
    We march, lit by Truth’s death-pyre, to the world’s satanic age.”

    30 August 1940

    The havoc of World War Two is foreseen here; but in the occult-yogic work destiny is getting reshaped. The atomic pyre has given birth to a new civilisation. A transcendentally luminous beginning has been made. The golden door that separated the lower and the higher has been shattered by a massive golden hammer.

    Was Sri Aurobindo’s incarceration for one year in Alipore Jail, 5 May 1908-5 May 1909, a temporary necessity? Is the Partition of India when the British Rule ended in 1947 a temporary necessity? How does we come out of it?

    Too much attachmentTo the impermanentCauses disillusionment.

    While in the process of evolution “temporary necessities” inevitably do arise, and in the very nature of things these must arise, there is absolutely no question of temporary necessity being there in the Inconscience-Void of the Involutionary plunge; that is the fundamental, the given. In the stages of individual as well as collective evolution these functionally “temporary necessities” have to be met and removed, removed not by spiritual sermons or spiritual theorisation but by will and action for which also comes the unexpected and powerful response from the superior source of dynamism. Conjointly then the authentic progress in divine felicities can start appearing. The first thing is release of the soul from the vast Ignorance and of the freedom of the spirit from the workings of the Lower Nature, Aparā Prakriti. When one has stepped into that freedom then only starts operating the freedom of the individual, then only becomes possible the rule of “divine anarchy” the Mother and Sri Aurobindo speak of.

    Is the time also of an occurrence arranged in the Divine Plan of things?

    All depends upon the plane from which one sees and speaks. There is a plane of divine consciousness in which all is known absolutely, and the whole plan of things foreseen and predetermined. That way of seeing lives in the highest reaches of the Supramental; it is the Supreme’s own vision. But when we do not possess that consciousness, it is useless to speak in terms that hold good only in that region and are not our present effective way of seeing things. For at a lower level of consciousness nothing is realised or fixed beforehand; all is in the process of making. Here there are no settled facts, there is only the play of possibilities; out of the clash of possibilities is realised the thing that has to happen. On this plane we can choose and select; we can refuse one possibility and accept another; we can follow one path, turn away from another. And that we can do, even though what is actually happening may have been foreseen and predetermined in a higher plane.

    The Supreme Consciousness knows everything beforehand, because everything is realised there in her eternity. But for the sake of her play and in order to carry out actually on the physical plane what is foreordained in her own supreme self, she moves here upon earth as if she did not know the whole story; she works as if it was a new and untried thread that she was weaving. It is this apparent forgetfulness of her own foreknowledge in the higher consciousness that gives to the individual in the active life of the world his sense of freedom and independence and initiative. These things in him are her pragmatic tools or devices, and it is through this machinery that the movements and issues planned and foreseen elsewhere are realised here.

    A day may come, must surely come, we will say, when humanity will be ready spiritually, morally, socially for the reign of universal peace; meanwhile the aspect of battle and the nature and function of man as a fighter have to be accepted and accounted for by any practical philosophy and religion. The Gita, taking life as it is and not only as it may be in some distant future, puts the question how this aspect and function of life, which is really an aspect and function of human activity in general, can be harmonised with the spiritual existence.
