A smile of the smile

There is nothing simpler than simplicity,          

Only a flame with leaping thrill of quest;

In hushed exuberance is beauty a flower,

A smile of the smile that can change the whole world;

The urge of joy gathers now passions of songs,

And a tranquil calm brings whole music down;

And the ear begins to see and the eye listen,

When perception reaches rapturous sense.

स्मितस्य स्मितं

सरलतया सरलतरं किमपि नास्ति,           

केवलं अन्वेषणस्य उच्छ्रितरोमाञ्चयुक्ता ज्वाला;

सौन्दर्यं पुष्पं निःशब्दप्रसन्नतायां,

स्मितस्य एकं स्मितं यत् समग्रं जगत् परिवर्तयितुं शक्नोति;

हर्षस्य​ आकांक्षा इदानीं गीतानां आग्रहान् सङ्गृह्णाति,

शान्तं च शान्तं सम्पूर्णं सङ्गीतं अधः आनयति;

कर्णश्च द्रष्टुं आरभते चक्षुः शृणोति,

यदा प्रतीतिः आनन्दितेन्द्रियं प्राप्नोति।

    Yes, a simple bell sound, played by the wind often arrives like a surprising smile through the silence, an instant reminder, call to attention, touching the heart…….connecting us to the secret player behind the scene, the wind, a movement, Krishna hiding behind light appearences, unfolding the mystery …..of the music of life.

      Like the Upanishadic Ear behind the ear and the Eye behind eye there is the Smile behind the smile, स्मितस्य स्मितं, it is that which brings about the transforming miracle. There is the Super-Sense, Sajñāna, the all-comprehending consciousness, wherefrom all the senses originate, making the eye hear and the ear to see.

    In scenes forbidden to our pallid sense

    Amid miraculous scents and wonder-hues

    He met the forms that divinise the sight,

    To music that can immortalise the mind

    And make the heart wide as infinity

    Listened, and captured the inaudible

    Cadences that awake the occult ear:

    Out of the ineffable hush it hears them come

    Trembling with the beauty of a wordless speech,

    And thoughts too great and deep to find a voice,

    Thoughts whose desire new-makes the universe. ||65.19||

    “Cadences that awake the occult ear” — that is the power and efficacy of svaram, a scale of sense that climbs with fiery feet, as we have in the next sentence.
