Earth-Mother sees the Change

The Enigma’s knot is tied in human kind. ||89.23||

A lightning from the heights that think and plan,

Ploughing the air of life with vanishing trails,

Man, sole awake in an unconscious world,

Aspires in vain to change the cosmic dream. ||89.24||

Awakened from her lower driven forms

The Earth-Mother gave her forces to his hands

And painfully he guards the heavy trust;

His mind is a lost torch-bearer on her roads. ||89.40||

In him the Earth-Mother sees draw near the change

Foreshadowed in her dumb and fiery depths,

A godhead drawn from her transmuted limbs,

An alchemy of Heaven on Nature’s base. ||89.59||

Who is this Earth-Mother with great concerns for Man? Yes, she is the presiding Goddess, the Deity, of the evolutionary possibility, one who has a orange-glowing prosperous psychic being in oneness with the transcendental Greatness and Growth.

If the Earth has a psychic being embodying its evolutionary aspiration and spiritual essence, its inner truth and guiding force, there has to be the Oversoul, in the Transcendent, supporting and sponsoring it from above. “The Oversoul can be understood as the transcendent Divine Presence that supports and sustains the psychic being of the Earth. This Oversoul is the universal consciousness that transcends individual and collective manifestations, yet it intimately champions and guides them. It is the supreme Divine Reality that holds the Earth and its psychic being within its infinite embrace and hug.” It oversees and nurtures the Earth’s evolution. “It is the source from which the psychic being draws its strength and inspiration, and it is the ultimate goal toward which the Earth’s consciousness aspires.” The Earth’s psychic being is not isolated; it is deeply and significantly connected with the transcendent Oversoul.

No wonder, in her dumb and fiery depths, in her soul and body, is foreshadowed, foreseen, the transformative change. And that change is a Godhead drawn from her own transmuted limbs, that change a golden alchemy of Heaven on Nature’s base.

Therefore the applause to the Earth is, in Prithwi Sūkta, “Give me the honey of words, O Earth, वाचो मधु पृथिवी धेहि मह्यम् ॥१६॥” Yet the Earth is at once a cradle and an arena for the divine experiment of evolution, its accomplishment and realisation. Therefore, advices the Divine Mother to Yogi Aswapati to remain assured that, that change will certainly occur, willed and decreed as it is from High. In the meanwhile, he must help suffering humanity to obey the Spirit’s urge and the Time’s dynamics to work things out. That is pretty wise and pragmatic a counsel, particularly when her Light shall be with him. She promises “All things shall change in God’s transfiguring hour.” God’s transfiguring hour is fixed, is decreed, — but when? But she need not specify it, she need not detail it out. She is precise and clear:

Above blind fate and the antagonist powers

Moveless there stands a high unchanging Will;

To its omnipotence leave thy work’s result. ||89.68||

All things shall change in God’s transfiguring hour. ||89.69||

But Aswapati has another proposal. He refuses to accept her suggestion and her instruction, her recommendation. What a daring! What an audacity! To defy the Divine Mother herself! He has the absolute freedom of the Spirit and in that splendidness he can will something else, something differently. If her will is one Truth-Will so also is his, in that marvellousness, his another, his too the bright Truth-Will. And there one Truth-Will does not contradict or clash, does not oppose another Truth-Will. A multiplicity of Possibilities has a full play in the realm of the Free Spirit, with the full understanding of the dynamics. That is, vast Brahman grows in vast multiple ways, grows multiply, in many ways, proliferates, prospers, up and down, within and without, in the past and in the future. All this in sheer Delight of the Truth-Conscious.
