Apropos of Two Vast Negations — 3

“When I first met Sri Aurobindo in Pondicherry”

Here is a revelation from the Mother about the manifestation of a new world which is going to mark a new divine step in the long course of the Evolution. Inter alia she tells the following:

“I shall relate an experience of mine when I first met Sri Aurobindo in Pondicherry. I was in deep concentration, seeing things in the Supermind, things that were to be but which were somehow not manifesting. I told Sri Aurobindo what I had seen and asked him if they would manifest. He simply said, ‘Yes.’ And immediately I saw that the Supramental had touched the earth and was beginning to be realised! This was the first time I had witnessed the power to make real what is true: it is the very same power that will bring about the realisation in you of the truth when you come in all sincerity, saying, ‘This falsehood I want to get rid of’, and the answer which you get is ‘Yes’.”

She saw things in the Supermind poised for manifestation; but that was not happening. This was in the afternoon of 29 March 1914, in the Guest House. The Yogi incarnate’s “Yes” had that power and preciousness. He himself had disclosed it in 1926:

“The supramental change is a thing decreed and inevitable in the evolution of the earth-consciousness; for its upward ascent is not ended and mind is not its last summit. But that the change may arrive, take form and endure, there is needed the call from below with a will to recognise and not deny the Light when it comes, and there is needed the sanction of the Supreme from above. The power that mediates between the sanction and the call is the presence and power of the Divine Mother. The Mother’s power and not any human endeavour and tapasya can alone rend the lid and tear the covering and shape the vessel and bring down into this world of obscurity and falsehood and death and suffering Truth and Light and Life divine and the immortal’s Ananda.”

He had decreed it, and here was she now to accomplish it. This had to happen in spite of the two formidable negations. But it had to happen only because of her, not otherwise. He wills and she executes. She saw things in the Supermind and she set herself to accomplish them.

In that “Yes” is the first birth of the materialising New Creation, of the City of Dawn announced by the Mother on 28 February 1968. In her talk dated 23 June 1965 she says: “… instead of the formation having to find the place, it was the place that caused the formation to be born.” It was already there but it had to form down below, build up and grow from here. She named it The City of Dawn, Auroville. In the circumstances prevailing as they are she knew that it was a dream. She envisioned it as a place on earth, a place in the authority of the supreme truth with peace, concord, harmony, beauty in all artistic forms, a world that is the world to be. In terms of working details there will be four large sections, cultural, industrial, international, and residential. The City is already prepared up there, and the question was to build it here.

But the beauty of all that is, — it is the supreme Lord himself who is going to do it. To live in Auroville is—to try to attain supreme Perfection. “Auroville has been decreed. So it was decreed—and done quite simply, like that, in obedience to a Command.”

Here is the Galaxy Plan formulated by the architect Roger Anger and approved by the Mother:

But if this is the divine body for Works, its soul for realisation is Matrimandir.

On the occasion of inauguration of Auroville on 28 February 1968 the following is the message that was broadcast from the Mother’s Room in the Ashram. The original is in French.

  1. Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But, to live in Auroville, one must be a willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.
  2. Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.
  3. Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.
  4. Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual human unity.

The Mother was a realist, she knew the earth is not ready to realise such an ideal for mankind, it does not yet possess sufficient knowledge to understand and adopt it nor the conscious force that is indispensable in order to execute it. That is why, she says, I call it a dream.

“And yet this dream is in the course of becoming a reality. The realisation is certainly far from perfect, but it is progressive; little by little we are advancing towards our goal which we hope we may one day be able to present to the world as a practical and effective way to emerge from the present chaos, to be born into a new life that is more harmonious and true.”

The occult has already happened; it has now to become earthly real. A completed and harmoniously functioning City of Dawn is a perfect answer to the conflict that is present in the two age-old stubborn Negatives, the Denial of the Materialist and the Refusal of the Ascetic. It is to do “a work of God on earthly soil.” [127.17]

Zech Joya Panganiban from Auroville writes to me:

    “The Yogi incarnate”?

Not appropriate and diminutive for the stature of Sri Aurobindo, who for me, with the Mother, are the incarnations of the Ishwara-MahaShakti, the Divine incarnating as Avatars through the progressive march of terrestrial evolution. The latest incarnation as Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, the complete Two-Who-Are-One Kalki Avatar, the last Avatar in human bodies, as a Direct Divine Action and Revelation to sow the Supramental Seed, the Supramental Consciousness-Force, Light and Substance for the advent of the new apex species, the Divine Manifestation of the Supramental being, the blossoming of the Satya Yuga on this very Earth. The Seventh Creation that will not lead to pralaya but to a Life Divine.

I would suggest “The Avatar, the Divine incarnate’s “Yes” had that power…”

I understand that you are not happy with that phrase. But if a clarification is needed here it is: “Well, it is the Supreme Himself as a Yogi who incarnates, as an Avatar, to do a work here, to accomplish the splendiferous and the marvellous.” RYD

@Zech Joya Panganiban: “Yogi”, in the sense of the Integral Yoga, is certainly not diminutive of what the Avatar has chosen to incarnate and bring to the manifested world. As long as we recognize (and certainly RYD does) their beings as Avatar. By the way, for the first time, we have, as you say, “the complete Two-Who-Are-One Kalki Avatar, the last Avatar in human bodies”. It is a realization, a symbol and an example of what is expected from us in Auroville: A spiritual AND material oneness, the very FEELING and EMBODIMENT of unity. Thus the conclusion of the article by Deshpande-ji: “The occult has already happened; it has now to become earthly real.”

Kalki Avatar: Frankly speaking, I do not like Sri Aurobindo being connected with Kalki. Pauranically it may be alright to see so. But even then there is no revelation of the Divine Being coming with the Divine Power, of the Divine Life in a Divine Body, nowhere it was spoken earlier. You have to have Presence and Power together, the Supreme He and She incarnating to do the work in its integrality. This is happening absolutely for the first time in the spiritual annals. The Mother says very emphatically that Sri Aurobindo is coming straight from the Supreme, directly. This is important.
