The Winds of Wonder

देहाची अर्चना धारण्या देवरूप

कोणी बरे केली ही अनाकलनीय घडण

जसे काही निःशब्दातून प्रसवे व्याकरण?

आहे निःसंशयपणे गद्याच्या खूप पलीकडचे,

प्रगल्भप्रांती, त्या तीर्थे, महाकाव्यही न पोहोचे;

नसे वर्ण सांगण्या, उज्वळ योजनेचा हुंकार,

केवळ परिपूर्ण ध्वनी स्तब्धतेचा पुरस्कार;                 

राहिले नाही आता स्मरण छोट्यामोठ्याचे

जाणीव जागरूकता भान सर्व ठायी त्याचे;

लावूनी उटणे प्रासादीक मंगलप्रहरी

झगझगे सुवर्णकांती आंतरीबाहेरी;

 उमजू लागली पार्थिवता श्रेष्ष्ठत्व येणारे,

अग्नीचे स्तोत्र गाती दिव्य माणिक हिरे;

देहाची अर्चना धारण्या देवरूप, ज्वलंत,

साठवूनी त्यात प्रखर चैतण्याचे अमरत्व;

न शिरे मृत्यु, मिळाले घर आनंदाला,

संकल्प तर कठीणतम कृतीने साधिला;

युगायुगांचे वाढविलेले आत्ममय धन

चोहीकडे झाले समृद्ध स्थापूनि प्रकाशमन.

A rendering into English by Akash Deshpande

Who has made this strange, enigmatic world

With grammar that flows even from words that are dumb?

Doubtless it is beyond the ken of all prose,

A profundity that poems never can plumb.

The colorless assent foretells a bright plan,

The complete sound that only silence can bestow,

Not big nor small, no memory remains,

Towards That all senses and consciousnesses flow.

Salve-smeared expanse at the auspicious hour

Sparked inside and out a golden light limns,

Earthliness sees the imminent grandeur,

Sublime rubies and diamonds chant the fire hymns

The body bows to bear the form of flaming God,

Dense conscious immortality in it secret lurks,

Death cannot enter it, yet it houses bliss,

This aim is attained through God’s laborious works.

The soul’s wealth amassed night after long night

Establishes everywhere as the Mind of Light.
