The arrival of surhomme consciousness
In her conversation of 1 January 1969 the Mother speaks of “morbid imagination” and tells that the body has no longer that feeling, of morbidity; it had gone because the vital and the mental have been sent away, there was no more their influence on the body. The body was reacting by saying, “No, it’s disgusting, what’s that!” That was remarkable with this body and it became very tranquil. It said, “Ah, no! I no longer want that, it belongs to the past.” The body left to itself has so much more practical common sense. An extraordinary STABILITY.
But what is that morbid imagination? She continues The only thing morbid was this physical mind, the mind of the physical, the body-mind, which Sri Aurobindo regarded as impossible to change — it was very stubborn, but it’s the one that has done the work, it has worked out the change; it is the body-mind that has done the work.
That was the golden Dawn of the new year. The body felt, “Oh, it’s really … truly new.” A light, golden Light and … benevolent. Benevolent in the sense of a certitude — a harmonious certitude. It was new.
On 4 January 1969 she elaborates: On the 1st something really strange took place. It began just after midnight, but I felt it at 2 in the morning. It was something very material, very external — outward — and luminous, with a golden light. It was very strong, powerful. But its character was a smiling benevolence, a peaceful joy, and a sort of blossoming in the joy and the light. She felt it for at least three hours. It was VERY material, sweet, very smiling, VERY BENEVOLENT … something … a kind of benevolence, something very close to the human. As if it had a taste, so concrete.
Her impression was that of an immense personality, (for it, the earth was small, like a ball), so very benevolent, and coming to … gently raise the little ball.
It was the impression of a personal god who comes to help. Strong, sweet, so understanding. And it was very external: the body felt it everywhere.
Is it the personality, she wondered if it wasn’t the supramental personality … which will, then, manifest later in material forms?
Since then, her body (permeated by that everywhere, a lot), was feeling much more joyful and less concentrated, living more in a happy, smiling expansion. There was a constant note of benevolence. A benevolent smile, with a GREAT FORCE. It was luminous, smiling, and so benevolent because of its POWER: a benevolence that imposes itself.
It was entirely new. And so concrete, like what the physical consciousness usually regards. It didn’t come through some inner being, through the psychic being: it came DIRECTLY onto the body.
The body’s feeling since that took place has been a sort of certitude; a certitude as if now it no longer were in an anxiety or uncertainty to know. “What will it be? What will this Supramental PHYSICALLY be like?” the body used to wonder.
Yes … it will permeate the bodies that are ready. It was the formation that was going to permeate and express itself in the bodies … which will be the bodies of the Supramental.
“Or maybe the superman? I don’t know. The intermediary between the two. Maybe the superman: it was very human, but a human of divine proportions.”
8 January 1969: And this descent of the superman consciousness … Yes, that’s it. It’s the descent of the superman consciousness.
“I had the assurance of it afterwards. It was on the Ist of January after midnight. I woke up at 2 in the morning, surrounded by a consciousness, so concrete and NEW that I had never experienced. It lasted for two or three hours, then spread out and went to find all those who could receive it. And I knew it was the consciousness of the superman, the intermediary between man and the supramental being. It has given the body an assurance, a sort of trust. It has made it steady and if it keeps the true attitude, all the support is there to help it. The curious thing is that when the Action is silent, it’s FAR MORE PRECISE than when it takes place through words. When the action is direct, it’s very precise. This Consciousness takes on a different “colour,” in everyone. It’s the same thing with words: words have a similar, but different meaning for each of those who utter them.”
15 January 1969:
It has remained, this superman consciousness, it’s very strong, oh! … Today again, I had the experience: it came, it was tremendous! It came massively, it enveloped me completely. Oh, it really is a power. Down to the vital.
Physically, the body cannot respond; there is indeed an action, but … it’s not that. But it has put a vital in the body, an awesome vital! You feel as if you were saying to people, “Keep still!” This superman consciousness is very consciously active.
You see (these two hibiscus flowers), it’s not the same thing: this is “Grace,” and this is “Supramental Consciousness” — we have the flower before the consciousness!
There is in it a consciousness (something VERY precious) that gives lessons to the body; “he” comes and tells the body, “Have this attitude, do this, do that in that way.” The body is happy, it’s quite reassured, it can’t make a mistake anymore.
It has come like a “mentor” — and PRACTICAL: “This is to be rejected; this is to be accepted; this is to be generalised; this for all inner movements. And it even becomes very material, in the sense that with certain vibrations, it says, “This is to be encouraged”; with others, “This is to be channelled”; with yet others, “This is to be got rid of ….” Small indications of that sort.
Years ago, at the Playground, I said, “The superman will probably be first a being of power, so as to be able to defend himself.” That’s it, it’s that experience. And it’s because it has come back as an experience that I remembered having said it. [Ref: 18 December 1957]
I’ve had the first experience for this body: it came like a rampart, it was an awesome power! Quite out of proportion.
The result is precise and concrete. With this whole tranquil assurance of knowledge comes.
For me, THE Consciousness limits itself to special activities, in special cases, but it’s always THE Consciousness; it limits itself to a certain way of being so as to accomplish His action.
22 January 1969
Oh, but this consciousness is very interesting! He [the Mentor] gives me lessons during the night to tell me the things that must change, and with symbolic sounds to make me clearly understand: he makes me LIVE certain situations to know what needs to be changed.
It doesn’t just concern itself with individuals. It’s very active.
He’s educating this body. We’ll see what’s going to happen it depends on the body’s plasticity, of course.
